Preparing for Your Headshot Session

Tips to help the true you shine through…

Getting your picture taken can be stressful… I get it. The do’s, the don’ts, the tips, and the tricks can be a mystery for the normal person confronted with the need to get a professional headshot.

I’ve been doing professional headshots in Charlotte NC for a long time, and I want you to feel and look your best. Here are my go-to recommendations...

#1 Be you, very well

My main piece of advice, is to wear what you are comfortable in. When you feel good, the best you shines through in your headshot.  Stick with your personal style, and work within that space.

#2 Clothes needs to fit you perfectly

Whatever the style, it needs to fit… shoulders, chest, neckline, waists, and sleeves

  • Clean, wrinkle-free clothing. Avoid pilled clothing, animal hair, and lint

  • Avoid strong patterns or logos

  • Choose colors that compliment your skin tone and eye color. Rich jewel tones like burgundy, emerald/forest green, and earthy muted blues, dark blues, and grays work well. Unless white is your personal signature, choose another color that doesn’t compete with your face as the focal point and blend into a white background.

Note on sleeveless… if you are 100% comfortable with your arms, then awesome! If you’re not, think about sleeves.

Good news… your professional headshot is chest-up, so no need to worry about pants or shoes.

#3 Headshot-ready Skin

  • Facials, waxing, and exfoliating are great ideas, just make sure you do them several days in advance, to allow any inflammation to subside

  • Rest. You want to look well-rested in your headshot. Try to go to bed earlier the day before to get those eight hours!

  • Water! Arrive to your headshot session fully hydrated for the fullest, healthiest skin

  • A makeup artist is always a great idea. If you’re doing it yourself, keep it simple – a coat of mascara, a subtle nude or rose-toned lip, a natural blush, and a foundation that offers a matte finish

  • Men: get a haircut, carefully shave or trim facial hair, and make sure your face is freshly washed to avoid the oily look

This couple choose a common hue of green that speaks to their connection.

#4 Get comfortable

-Engage in anything that calms your mind before the shoot. It really makes a difference in your picture.

I hope these recommendations help you. If you have questions, or want to go over a specific outfit, I'm glad to talk! A professional headshot can show the successful side of you to the world, and I want to help you be your best.
